With the new laws that have recently been put into fruition on net neutrality, some internet users, website owners and web hosting providers are curious as to what changes they can expect. With all of the conflicting information that is circling the media; it can be hard to know whether or not net neutrality is a good idea. Hopefully, I can help shed some light on the subject for you, and you can decide for yourself.

With the new internet rules that will be put into effect, the FCC wants to create one, singularly regulated, internet. Basically, this means that the internet would be the same for everyone across the board in terms of speed and content.

Everyone would have the same speed of internet, regardless of their internet service provider. This is actually very important to those living in rural areas, since most of these areas will have to receive their internet through wireless broadband technology. The purpose of the bill is to ensure that the internet continues to be a place for people to share new and inventive ideas, and for people to spotlight their products and services fairly.

Also, we won't have to be concerned with who has broadband, and those who do have broadband can get what they want without the fear of their content being edited. Up until now, internet providers relied heavily on the sales of phone service and cable
service. Their reliance on these sales caused these companies' interest to sway in favor of this, which may have caused them to act in such a manner that was not in their consumer's best interest.

Many of these companies argue that the internet is already regulated a certain amount, so these policies are unclear on the matter of what is to be edited and what is not to be edited. Other companies see these policies as a way to bring bandwidth-heavy applications to internet users, that when before, they would have caused most networks to crash. Internet service providers can no longer block voice and video products that are in direct competition with their own, which opens the market for more advertisement and provides smaller companies with more access to the general public.

300102949_950729607cWhile all of this does sound like a move in a positive direction, internet service providers argue that these new policies will cause everyone's service quality to go down considerably. To combat intentional service manipulation, the FCC put out a proposal that required all internet service providers to adhere to management guidelines pertaining to their network.

Basically, those are the new policies regarding net neutrality. For some, this new policy means that they will have access to an internet quality that they have not had before and for others, their service may seem to get slower. It is all in how you perceive this change, as to how it will affect you.
