Instant messenger programs are very popular way to communicate with friends and family on the Internet. Even a number of businesses use them to communicate with employees working off site. Most people will already have MSN messenger installed by having Windows installed, so it is usually a simple method of loading it up. Signing up for an account and then away you go.

So now that you have messenger up and running the first thing to do is add your friends. This is straight forward as you just add their email addresses. Since you should find these in your address book, it is even easier if you already have an email account with Microsoft e.g. hotmail.

With your messenger up and running you will start to notice that it can look a little plain. The first thing you need to do is set up an image to represent yourself. This is usually known as an Avatar. This can take the form of a picture of yourself, but it can be more fun to add an image to represent your mood or situation. Perhaps look for something entertaining, like an image form your favourite cartoon or film. Othe
r people will see this image so pick carefully!

Another way to customise your messenger is to add a background image, this is only seen by yourself but helps to personalise the experience, perhaps you could put a scenic background to add some life into the screen. One point to note, you need to read text on top of this so perhaps not go for something with too darker pictures.

The next method to customise your messenger is with smileys. This are sometimes known as emotions or emoticons. These are all those images that you see on the web of a smiley face to represent an emotion. For example laughing or crying. There are hundreds of these around and can be found all over the web, a good place to start is at http://msn-nick.net/smileys.php.

Now you are onto the last thing to look into, this is your name. You can stick with the simple Joe Bloggs style name or you could add some humour into your messenger. Look for some fun nicknames which can again represent your feeling. You can have nicknames representing anything from love, to cute or even just a joke. Something topical, take a look at the many lists online and change your nickname frequently.
